About Winning Writers

Winning Writers finds and creates quality resources for poets and writers. It was founded by Jendi Reiter and Adam Cohen in 2001. They are located in Western Massachusetts.

Winning Writers seeks to be a welcoming place for diverse authors and stories, with a culture of listening to people of all genders, backgrounds, and abilities. They look for high-quality original writing that portrays under-represented perspectives with sensitivity, accuracy, and passion. 

Details of the Contest

  • The length limit of your piece of poetry should be 250 lines maximum per poem.
  • Age: There is no restriction on the age of the author. 
  • Location: Authors from all countries eligible except Syria, Iran, North Korea, Crimea, Russia, and Belarus (due to US government restrictions). 
  • First time entering? Winning Writers has prepared this brief video to guide you. 
  • The results of the 21st contest will be announced on April 15, 2024. 
  • Fee: $22 per submission of 1-3 poems. Enter as many submissions as you wish.
  • Deadline: September 30, 2023.

Prizes

  • Tom Howard Prize: The award amount for the Tom Howard Prize is $3,000 (Rs. 2.45L+) for a poem in any style or genre.
  • Margaret Reid Prize: The award amount for the Margaret Reid Prize is $3,000 (Rs. 2.45L+) for a poem that rhymes or has a traditional style.
  • The top two winners will also receive two-year gift certificates from their co-sponsor, Duotrope, which is a $100 (Rs. 8k+) value.
  • Honourable Mentions: The receivers of the Honourable Mentions (10 awards) will get awards of $200 (Rs. 16k+) each (the pieces for this category can be in any style.)
  • Top 12 entries published online.
