About the Competition
The HG Wells Short Story Competition is founded by the world-renowned BBC Aeronautics Correspondent Reg Turnill and his wife, Margaret, to celebrate the life and works of HG Wells and encourage creative writing, especially among the young.

Theme of the Competition
The theme for this yearβs competition is MOTION in its broadest interpretation.
Categories
There are two categories:
- Authors 21 years of age and under (on 10th July 2023) with a prize of Β£1,000 (Rs. 1L+).
- Authors aged 22 years and above on 10th July 2023 with a prize of Β£500 (Rs. 50k+).
Prizes
The annual HG Wells Short Story Competition offers a Β£500 (Rs. 50k+) Senior and Β£1,000 (Rs. 1L+) Junior prize and free publication of all shortlisted entries in a quality, professionally published paperback anthology (and Kindle version).
Entry Fee
Entry to the Junior competition is FREE and entry to the Senior competition is Β£10, which is approx. Rs. 1k (Β£5 for those with student ID, which is approx. Rs. 500).
Important Dates
- Monday, July 10, 2023 (11 PM BST): Final date for entries.
- Thursday, September 21, 2023: Shortlists announced.
- Sunday, November 19, 2023: Awards Ceremony.

The Β£1,000 (Rs. 1L+) HG Wells Short Story Competition Junior Prize is funded by a legacy from their founder Reg Turnill at his specific instruction. The Β£500 (Rs. 50k+) β22 and overβ prize was not part of that legacy, hence the different amounts.Β You can learn more in their FAQs.
