About the Contest

To generate awareness about the importance of the handloom industry and its contribution to the socio-economic development of the country, August 7 is celebrated every year as β€œNational Handloom Day”. August 7 was chosen as the National Handloom Day to commemorate the Swadeshi Movement which was launched on this day in 1905 in the Calcutta Town hall. The first National Handloom Day was inaugurated on August 7, 2015, by Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi at the Centenary Hall of Madras University in Chennai.

The Ministry of Textiles is organising a selfie contest with MyGov where Indian citizens are requested to wear Indian Handloom and showcase their bonding with handlooms by sharing interesting selfies with Indian Handloom.
