About the Challenge

The Department of Drinking Water and Sanitation, Ministry of Jal Shakti, in collaboration with MyGov, is inviting all citizens to participate in a 7-day Swachhata Challenge. This initiative encourages participants to create high-resolution videos showcasing day-wise highlights, including before and after scenes of the spot or site they choose to clean. The goal is to inspire others and communicate the significance of Swachhata (cleanliness) in a creative and engaging way.

Theme: β€˜Swabhav Swachhata – Sanskaar Swachhata’

The Swachhata Challenge is part of the broader β€˜Swachhata Hi Seva’ campaign, observed this year from 17th September to 2nd October, under the theme β€˜Swabhav Swachhata – Sanskaar Swachhata’ (ΰ€Έΰ₯ΰ€΅ΰ€ΰ€Ύΰ€΅ ΰ€Έΰ₯ΰ€΅ΰ€šΰ₯ΰ€›ΰ€€ΰ€Ύ – ΰ€Έΰ€‚ΰ€Έΰ₯ΰ€•ΰ€Ύΰ€° ΰ€Έΰ₯ΰ€΅ΰ€šΰ₯ΰ€›ΰ€€ΰ€Ύ). The aim is to facilitate large-scale advocacy and encourage citizen participation for Swachhata across the nation. This year, the challenge focuses on cleaning neglected, difficult-to-clean spots (black spots), recognizing the invaluable contributions of sanitation workers, celebrating past achievements, and recommitting to the future of sanitation and sustainable waste management in India.

Core Messages of the Challenge

The Swachhata Challenge revolves around these core messages:

  • β€˜Swabhav’ (Behaviour): Building a natural inclination toward cleanliness.
  • β€˜Sanskar’ (Values): Inculcating the values of cleanliness in daily life.
  • β€˜Zimmedari’ (Responsibility): Encouraging personal responsibility towards maintaining cleanliness.
  • β€˜Bhaagidari’ (Collective Participation): Promoting community efforts in making our surroundings cleaner.

How to Participate?

Each day of the challenge highlights a specific task aimed at creating a cleaner and healthier environment:

  • Day 1 Clean Your Surroundings: Spend 30 minutes cleaning your toilets and surroundings. Safely dispose of any waste collected during this time.
  • Day 2 Segregate Waste: Separate waste into categories like plastic, paper, glass, kitchen waste, etc., and ensure proper disposal. Spread the message of effective waste management in your community.
  • Day 3 Clean Public Spaces: Clean a nearby public space such as a park, bus stop, or playground for 30 minutes. Take part in sweeping, collecting, and safely disposing of waste to enhance the area’s cleanliness.
  • Day 4 Refuse, Reduce, and Reuse Plastic: Refuse single-use plastics and opt for reusable bags. Get creative with recycling plastic waste into useful products with potential economic value.
  • Day 5 Swachhata Pledge: Take a pledge to maintain cleanliness in your everyday life and encourage others to do the same.
  • Day 6 Composting: Demonstrate the use of a nearby compost pit by placing wet or green waste into a pit or pot. Use the compost for fields, parks, gardens, or potted plants.
  • Day 7 Community Clean-Up Drive: Organize a 30-minute clean-up drive with friends and family, focusing on water bodies like beaches, riverbanks, or ponds.
