About the Initiative
The Ministry of Jal Shakti, Government of India, is spearheading efforts to improve water resource management in the country, a critical initiative in the context of climate change. Recognizing the need for collective action, the Ministry actively involves stakeholders across sectors in promoting innovative practices for sustainable water management.
Encourage the various stakeholder including the Civil Societies, Gram Panchayats, Urban Local Bodies, Water User Associations, Institutions, Corporate Sector etc. for adopting innovative practices of ground water augmentation by rainwater harvesting and artificial recharge, promoting water use efficiency, recycling & re-use of water and creating awareness through people’s participation in the targeted areas resulting into the sustainability of ground water resources development, adequate capacity building amongst the stakeholders etc.
About the Award
Since 2018, the Ministry has been organizing the National Water Awards (NWAs) to honor individuals, organizations, and institutions implementing impactful measures to conserve water. The awards celebrate practices such as augmenting groundwater, rainwater harvesting, recycling water, and fostering a culture of sustainable water management.
For 2024, the 6th National Water Awards have been launched through the Rashtriya Puraskar portal via this link, inviting online entries. These awards aim to inspire and recognize efforts in various categories, including the βBest Schoolβ category, which encourages schools practicing innovative water conservation strategies to participate.
Eligibility
Any State, District, Village Panchayat, Urban Local Body, School, College, Institution, Industry, Civil Society, Water User Association who has done good work in the field of water conservation and management is eligible to apply.

Award
- Trophy and Citation will be given for Best State (1st, 2nd & 3rd winners) & Best District are awarded for each of 5 zones i.e. Northern, Southern, Western, Eastern & North Eastern.
- Trophy and Citation along with Cash Prize will be given to awardees in Best Village Panchayat, Best Urban Local Body, Best School or College, Best Industry, Best Civil Society, Best Water User Association. (Rs. 2 lakhs – 1st winner, 1.5 lakhs – 2nd winner &1 lakh – 3rd winner)
- The cash prize for awardees in Best Institution (other than School/College) category is Rs. 2 lakhs – 1st winner and Rs. 1.5 lakhs – 2nd winner (for campus usage) & one award of Rs. 2 lakhs (for other than campus).
Selection Process
All applications received for 6th National Water Awards are scrutinized by a Screening Committee of the Department & shortlisted applications are placed before the Jury Committee which is constituted by the Department of Water Resources, River Development and Ganga Rejuvenation, Ministry of Jal Shakti. No Award is conferred except on the recommendation of the Jury Committee. The recommendations of the Committee are submitted to the Honβble Minister (Jal Shakti) for approval. Thereafter, the names of winners are announced on a suitable date.
How Schools Can Participate?
Schools that actively implement water conservation measuresβsuch as efficient rainwater harvesting systems, groundwater recharge projects, or effective wastewater recycling practicesβare encouraged to apply. Participation guidelines are detailed on the Ministryβs website (6th NWA Guidelines). The last date to submit entries is December 31, 2024.
