About the Course

The course explains human rights concepts and provides tools for consumer organizations as key stakeholders, to support their communication, campaigns, advocacy and policy dialogue and to help bring awareness of human rights closer to consumers.

Audience

This course addresses the subject matter from a technical perspective but is written for the general public. It is primarily intended for:

  • Policy-makers and advisors on labour, migration, agriculture and rural development.
  • Managers and technical staff in the ministries responsible for agriculture, rural development, migration and employment.
  • United Nations Country Teams and FAO staff.
  • Academia and non-governmental organizations (NGOs) whose work relates to migrant workers or labour supply in agriculture/agrifood systems.
  • General public.

Course Structure 

The course provides a quick introduction to human rights and the human rights-based approach, as they relate to consumer organizations. Subsequent sections describe some of the areas of action for community organizations that can benefit from a human rights-based approach, specifically:

  • Action 1: Protect the right to food of consumersΒ 
  • Action 2: Support national policy and legislative developmentΒ 
  • Action 3: Engage with human rights mechanismsΒ 
  • Action 4: Promote sustainable consumptionΒ 
  • Action 5: Support private sector accountability
