Competition Details

The Nikon Small World Competition first began in 1975 as a means to recognize and applaud the efforts of those involved with photography through the light microscope. Since then, Small World has become a leading showcase for photomicrographers from the widest array of scientific disciplines.

The Nikon Small World Photomicrography Competition is open to anyone with an interest in microscopy and photography through the microscope. A photomicrograph is a technical document that can be of great significance to science or industry. But a good photomicrograph is also an image whose structure, color, composition, and content is an object of beauty, open to several levels of comprehension and appreciation.

Eligibility

The Nikon Small World Photomicrography Competition is open only to individuals who are at least eighteen (18) years old at the time of entry and have access to a light microscope. 

Guidelines

  • Images must be submitted in .jpeg, .png, or .tiff format.
  • Images should be submitted with the highest quality with regard to file size, bit depth, and resolution.
  • Images do not need to be taken with a Nikon-branded microscope.
  • Images must be taken by Entrant using a light microscope. Images taken with an electron or any other microscope(s) that do not capture imagery using optical light technology are not eligible.
  • Macro photography is not eligible.

Prizes

There will be twenty (20) winners ranked from first (1st) place through twentieth (20th) place, plus Honorable Mention prizes, and prizes for images of distinction if and as determined by the Judges.

  • First Prize: Three Thousand U.S. Dollars ($3,000.00).
  • Second Prize: Two Thousand U.S. Dollars ($2,000.00).
  • Third Prize: One Thousand U.S. Dollars ($1,000.00).
  • Fourth Prize: Eight Hundred U.S. Dollars ($800.00).
  • Fifth Prize: Six Hundred U.S. Dollars ($600.00).
  • Sixth Prize: Four Hundred U.S. Dollars ($400.00).
  • Seventh, Eighth, Ninth and Tenth Prizes: Three Hundred U.S. Dollars ($300.00) each.
  • Eleventh, Twelfth, Thirteenth, Fourteenth, Fifteenth, Sixteenth, Seventeenth, Eighteenth, Nineteenth and Twentieth Prizes: Two Hundred U.S. Dollars ($200.00) each.
  • Honorable Mentions: One Hundred U.S. Dollars ($100.00) each. The number of Honorable Mention Prizes will be determined by the Judges in their sole discretion.

Nikon Small World is the world’s preeminent photographic competition for images TAKEN THROUGH THE MICROSCOPE. It is comprised of 2 separate contests,Β Nikon Small WorldΒ andΒ Nikon Small World in MotionΒ (sometimes referred to as SWIM).Β Nikon Small WorldΒ is for STILL images taken through a microscope andΒ Small World in MotionΒ is for movies, time-lapse movies also taken through a light microscope.

Who can enter?

The contest is open to anyone over the age of 18 years who is not an employee of Nikon, their agencies, affiliates or any competing microscope or camera manufacturers.

What can you win?

Top prize is $3,000 for each top winner inΒ Nikon Small WorldΒ ANDΒ Nikon Small World in Motion. Additional prizes are awarded to top 20, Honorable Mention and Images of Distinction forΒ Small WorldΒ and Top 5 and Honorable mentions forΒ Small World in Motion.

What can you enter?

Nikon Small WorldΒ is open for all STILL images taken using a light microscope (sorry, Electron microscope and Macro images are not eligible).Β 

Who picks the winners?

A judging panel comprised of an independent group of between 4 and 5 individuals with varying areas of expertise in imaging, science and scientific communications. The judges are chosen by Nikon and Nikon has people on hand at the judging mainly to assure eligibility/rules compliance, and to provide any support our judges may need in the process.
