The Film and Television Institute of India is a film institute under the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting of the Government of India and aided by the Central Government of India.

Course Details

Film and Television Institute of India (FTII), Pune, under its ‘Centre for Open Learning (CFOL)‘ initiative, announces Online Course – Fundamentals of Film Direction. This course is for participants with little or no filmmaking experience. This is an introductory course and it is not meant to be a substitute for longer-term programs.

The course aims at developing a basic understanding of the art and craft of Film Direction and gaining an insight into the Aesthetical and Philosophical concerns of Film Direction. The course will help to understand:

  • How a Directors’ vision comes to life from idea to screen.
  • What are the tools available to help implement the Director’s vision in the film.
  • How a Director makes informed creative decisions.
  •  How a Director communicates with cast, crew and, ultimately, the audience.

The course will be conducted through a series of online classes incorporating discussions, screenings and analysis of film excerpts etc. The contours of the course will broadly be as under:

  • What is Cinema?
  • Language of Cinema.
  • Space and Time in Cinema.
  • Film Form.
  • Film Image.
  • Film Sound.
  • Continuity, Montage, Mise-en –Scene.
  • The Film Narrative and Narrative Structures.
  • Elements of Story.
  • The Screenplay.
  • Working with Actors.
  • The Role of film Director.

Timings

10.30 am to 12.30 pm and 2.30 pm to 4.30 pm (Indian Standard Time – IST), 04 hrs per day.

Educational Qualification

HSC (12th pass). In exceptional cases, 10th pass may be considered.

Course Fee

  • For Indian Nationals: Rs 3,900/- 
  • For Foreigners including NRI, OCI etc. and also those Indian Nationals who are presently staying outside India: Rs 11,700/-
