Challenge Details
Create a one-page illustrated response to an article, Opinion essay, video, graph, photo collection or podcast from The New York Times that was published in 2023 (or, if you are doing this in January, in 2023 or 2024).
You can make your one-pager by hand or digitally . The goal is to show your engagement with the information and ideas in the Times piece. Be creative and have fun.
What Should My One- Pager Include?
Your one- pager MUST have:
- The headline and date of the Times piece.
- A quote.
- An image or illustration.
Your one- pager should also have atleast two additional responses, such as:
- Why you picked the piece.
- Your opinion of it.
- Something you learned.
- A summary or analysis.
- The piece’s effect on you.
- A message to the author.
- Questions you’re left with.
- A connection or comparison.
- Someoneyou wouldsend the piece to.
- A a new word or phrase you learned.
- Something you think was missing.
- Something you admired.
Contest Rules
- The contest is open to students ages 13 to 19 who are in middle school or high school anywhere in the world.
- You may work alone or in pairs for this challenge, but students should submit only one entry each.
- The best one- pagers will be detailed, clear, creative and illuminating, and will show us your thinking about, and engagement with, a Times piece.
Prizes
Having your work published on The Learning Network and being eligible to be chosen to have your work published in the print editions of The New York Times.
Selection Criteria
Your work will be read by New York Times journalists as well as by Learning Network staff members and educators from around the United States.
