About West Bengal
West BengalΒ is aΒ stateΒ in theΒ eastern portionΒ ofΒ India. It is situated along theΒ Bay of Bengal, along with a population of over 91 million inhabitants within an area of 88,752Β km2Β (34,267Β sqΒ mi) as of 2011. The population estimate as of 2023 is 102,552,787. West Bengal is theΒ fourth-most populousΒ andΒ thirteenth-largest state by areaΒ in India, as well as theΒ eighth-most populous country subdivisionΒ of the world.
As a part of theΒ Bengal regionΒ of theΒ Indian subcontinent, it bordersΒ BangladeshΒ in the east, andΒ NepalΒ andΒ BhutanΒ in the north. It also borders the Indian states ofΒ Jharkhand,Β Odisha,Β Bihar,Β SikkimΒ andΒ Assam. The state capital isΒ Kolkata, theΒ third-largest metropolis, andΒ seventh largest city by populationΒ in India. West Bengal includes theΒ Darjeeling Himalayan hill region, theΒ Ganges delta, theΒ Rarh region, the coastalΒ SundarbansΒ and theΒ Bay of Bengal. The state’s main ethnic group are theΒ Bengalis, with theΒ Bengali HindusΒ forming the demographic majority.
The area’s early history featured a succession ofΒ Indian empires, internal squabbling, and a tussle betweenΒ HinduismΒ andΒ BuddhismΒ for dominance. Ancient Bengal was the site of several majorΒ Janapadas, while the earliest cities date back to theΒ Vedic period.Β
The region was part of several ancient panβIndian empires, including theΒ Vangas,Β Mauryans, and theΒ Guptas. The citadel ofΒ GauαΈaΒ served as the capital of theΒ GauαΈa Kingdom, theΒ Pala Empire, and theΒ Sena Empire.
IslamΒ was introduced through trade with theΒ Abbasid Caliphate, but following theΒ GhuridΒ conquests led byΒ Bakhtiyar KhaljiΒ and the establishment of theΒ Delhi Sultanate, the Muslim faith spread across the entire Bengal region. During theΒ Bengal Sultanate, the territory was a majorΒ trading nationΒ in the world, and was often referred by the Europeans as the “richest country to trade with”.
Scholarship Details
Scholarship is awarded to students for pursuing studies from class XI to Ph.D.
Eligibility Criteria
- Applicant must be a domicile of West Bengal.
- Annual Family Income upto Rs. 2.0 lakh.
- Minimum marks required is 50% in the last examination.
