PROMYS IndiaΒ is a partnership ofΒ PROMYSΒ withΒ Indian Institute of ScienceΒ (IISc). PROMYS India aims to provide an environment for talented young people that will encourage curiosity and a deep personal involvement with the creative and collaborative elements of mathematics and science.

About IISc Bengaluru

The Indian Institute of Science is a public, deemed, research university for higher education and research in science, engineering, design, and management. It is located in the southern Indian city of Bangalore, Karnataka.

Programme Details

A challenging six-week residential mathematics summer programme, PROMYS India is open to mathematically talented secondary and higher secondary students (Standards IX – XII or equivalent). Meticulously selected students from across India will gather on the campus of theΒ Indian Institute of Science (IISc)Β Bengaluru to immerse themselves in rigorous mathematics.

PROMYS India is closely modelled on its parent programme, Program in Mathematics for Young Scientists (PROMYS) which has been running at Boston University in the United States since 1989.

All students accepted to PROMYS India 2024 will receive a full scholarship covering all tuition, hostel, and meals.Β In addition, applicants can apply for need-based funds for travel and laundry expenses. These full scholarships are thanks to the generosity and vision of PROMYS India’s founding sponsors: Nick Nash & Phalgun Raju, Avi and Sandra Nash, Indira Foundation, and Morph.org and to PROMYS India’s other generousΒ partners and donors.

Duration

The programme will run from 5 May to 15 June 2024Β (dates not yet final). An exceptionally talented group of students and counsellors gathered for six weeks of exciting mathematics on the campus of the Indian Institute of Science in Bengaluru for PROMYS India 2023. We are now looking forward to PROMYS India 2024.

Eligibility

Β To be eligible to apply, students must be in secondary or higher secondary school inΒ Standards IX – XIIΒ (orΒ +1, +2, or PUC). Students attending government-funded schools, government-aided private schools, unaided private or independent schools, sixth form colleges, home schools, and other types of secondary and higher secondary schools in India are all eligible to apply. Students need to be at least 15 (and not yet 19) by the start of the programme.

How many people will be at PROMYS India?

There will be over 45: Approximately 34 students and 12 counsellors plus faculty, research mentors, and visiting mathematicians.Β 

Will I learn “just” Number Theory at PROMYS India?

Absolutely not! Whatever your current level of maths experience, you will be exposed to a wide range of new mathematical knowledge and a deeper level of understanding. There will be seminars, courses, minicourses, lectures, research, and informal discussions on a wide range of maths-related topics and areas.

Where will I live when I’m at PROMYS India?

You will live on the campus of the Indian Institute of Science (IISc), Bengaluru in gender separate housing area. Β The rooms are single or double-occupancy with a bathroom for each room.Β 

Has everyone at PROMYS India been doing really advanced maths for years before they apply?

No. Some have and some haven’t. What they all share is the desire and ability to think deeply about fundamental mathematical principles. The study of Number Theory lends itself particularly well to significant exploration by students from a wide range of mathematical backgrounds.
