Competition Details
The 2024 School Essay Competition, organised in partnership with theΒ Financial Times, invites students to answer the following question:Β
Drawing on information from your daily life, what sustainability action points would you prioritise?
Include no more than ten key ideas and justify your choices. Use accompanying information from the FT and other sources.Β
The judges are looking for:Β
- A clear essay or β―ArcGIS StoryMapβ―which is well-evidenced and reaches a clear conclusion.
- Submissions that do not exceed 1,000 words (excluding references)Β –Β submissions over 1,000 words will not be considered. The word count should be provided in the document.
- Referenced sources of information and data.
- Submissions which are the entrantβs own work andβ―relevant to the question and guidanceΒ .
The Society runs this competition in partnership with theΒ Financial Timesβ― as part of its education programme to support geography teachers and their pupils.

Eligibility
The competition is open to sixth form geography students aged 16-18 who are registered to study A Level geography or equivalent in Year 12 or 13 on the closing date. This includes studentsΒ in the UK and overseas. Overseas students must be studying geography as a separate subject (or geography as part of social studies in the US, for example).
Prizes
The winner will receive a Β£50 Amazon voucher, which may be delivered directly by email. The winnerβs entry will be published on the Societyβs website and may also be published on FT.com, however, publication on FT.com is at the sole discretion of the FT. The winning and highly commended entries may also be published in Routes Journal (highly commended entries can be submitted by the entrants to Routes for consideration; the winning entry will be automatically submitted to Routes for consideration).
The winner will be notified by mid-November 2024 by email.
