About the Competition

The 2025 International Student Competition is now open, celebrating 15 years of fostering global youth engagement. Since its inception in 2010, over 14,000 entries from 120 countries have addressed environmental topics like biodiversity, climate justice, and sustainability. This year, the competition invites students to creatively express how eco-anxiety can be transformed into eco-action and empowerment.

Eco-anxiety, defined as the emotional distress caused by the climate crisis, affects over 50% of young people worldwide. This competition provides a supportive outlet for students to explore solutions and express their thoughts through a variety of formats such as essays, videos, artwork, music, and poetry.

Theme

A recent United Nations report identifies eco-anxiety as a β€œhidden crisis” with far-reaching impacts on youth. As young people increasingly express feelings of fear, sadness, and anger about environmental degradation, many believe that these emotions can be powerful motivators for climate action. The competition theme emphasizes that responses like anxiety and anger can be natural and healthy, providing opportunities for individuals and groups to channel these feelings into positive environmental engagement.

Purpose of the Competition

Through the competition, organizers aim to turn feelings of eco-anxiety into empowerment by fostering youth action. In recent years, there has been a significant rise in youth-led environmental movements, demonstrating that eco-anxiety can lead to powerful advocacy and tangible change. This platform encourages students to transform their emotional responses into creative solutions, while also providing hope and agency.

Submission Guidelines

The 2025 competition accepts a wide range of submissions, allowing students the freedom to interpret the theme in creative ways. Participants can choose from various mediums such as artwork, video, essays, music, poetry, or even letters and stories. The key is for students to reflect on how eco-anxiety affects them personally and express how they envision a path from eco-anxiety to eco-action and empowerment. Submissions must meet the criteria outlined in the official brief.
