Read the CBSE Notification on Establishment of Sugar Boards in Schools to monitor and reduce sugar intake among children.

About the Notification

The National Commission for Protection of Child Rights (NCPCR), a statutory body under the CPCR Act, 2005, has issued a crucial directive aimed at improving the health and well-being of schoolchildren across India. Recognizing the growing health risks associated with excessive sugar intake, especially among vulnerable and marginalized children, the NCPCR has recommended the establishment of β€˜Sugar Boards’ in schools.

Alarming Rise of Sugar-Related Health Issues

Over the past decade, there has been a sharp increase in Type 2 diabetes among children, a condition that was once predominantly seen in adults. This concerning trend has been closely linked to the easy availability and overconsumption of sugary snacks, soft drinks, and processed foodsβ€”many of which are readily accessible within school environments.

Key statistics reveal that:

  • Children aged 4 to 10 years get 13% of their daily calories from sugar
  • Children aged 11 to 18 years get 15%,
Far exceeding the recommended limit of just 5%

This overconsumption is contributing to:

  • Obesity
  • Dental problems
  • Metabolic disorders
  • Decline in academic performance due to poor health

NCPCR’s Two-Pronged Initiative for Schools

In response, all schools are requested and encouraged to take the following proactive steps:

Establishment of β€˜Sugar Boards’

These display boards should be placed in visible areas and include:

  • Recommended daily sugar limits for different age groups
  • Sugar content in commonly consumed food and drinks (e.g., junk food, cold drinks)
  • Health hazards of excessive sugar consumption
  • Suggestions for healthier alternatives

The aim is to educate students about the long-term impact of sugar and guide them toward more informed and healthy food choices.

Organize Awareness Seminars and Workshops

Schools should also conduct regular seminars and workshops to:

  • Raise awareness among students, teachers, and parents
  • Encourage healthier eating habits
  • Foster a supportive, health-conscious school environment

Submission Guidelines

Schools are requested to submit a brief report along with photographs of these initiatives in PDF format at this link by 15th July 2025.
