About Bombay Natural History Society

TheΒ Bombay Natural History SocietyΒ (BNHS), founded on 15 September 1883, is one of the largestΒ non-governmental organisationsΒ in India engaged inΒ conservationΒ andΒ biodiversityΒ research. It supports many research efforts through grants and publishes theΒ Journal of the Bombay Natural History Society. Many prominent naturalists, including the ornithologistsΒ SΓ‘lim AliΒ andΒ S. Dillon Ripley, have been associated with it.

The BNHS logo is theΒ great hornbill, inspired by a great hornbill named William, who lived on the premises of the Society from 1894 until 1920, during the honorary secretaryships ofΒ H. M. PhipsonΒ until 1906 andΒ W. S. MillardΒ from 1906 to 1920.Β The logo was created in 1933, the golden jubilee year of the Society’s founding.

The Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change (MoEF& CC), Government of India, had selected the Bombay Natural History Society (BNHS) as an EIACP (Environmental Information, Awareness, Capacity Building, and Livelihood Programme) Resource partner on Avian Ecology.

Since its inception the focus of EIACP has been on providing information to decision makers, policy planners, scientists and engineers, research workers, etc. all over the country. As avian ecology is a broad-ranging, multi-disciplinary subject, a comprehensive information system on it would necessarily involve effective participation of the concerned institutions/ organizations and all interested individuals in the country that are actively engaged in work relating to different subject areas of avian ecology or environment.Β
