Registrations are invited for Kaapi with Kuriosity Talk Session on Dusty Flows in Nature by Jawaharlal Nehru Planetarium, Bengaluru. It is open to all.

About JNP

The Jawaharlal Nehru Planetarium (JNP) is administered by Bangalore Association for Science Education (BASE). The BASE is devoted to science popularisation and non formal science education.

About Kaapi with Kuriosity

Kaapi with Kuriosity is a monthly public lecture series organised by the International Centre for Theoretical Sciences (ICTS-TIFR), in collaboration with theΒ Jawaharlal Nehru PlanetariumΒ and other educational institutions in Bengaluru.

The aim of the talks in this series is to stimulate the curiosity of the public towards the myriad aspects of science. The setting for these talks will be informal with a lot of scope for open discussions. The scientific background assumed will not be beyond the school level. As such, they are easily accessible to school/college students, families and working professionals interested in science.

Abstract

They will begin with some examples of what we will term as β€œdusty flows”, which include snow avalanches, dust storms, and clouds too! We will discuss why these are important to understand. I will then outline some open questions in this area and describe how we go about asking and answering some of these questions. With examples, I will try to show how unexpected behaviour emerges from simple situations.

Speaker

Rama Govindarajan is a Senior Professor and Dean at the International Centre for Theoretical Sciences, Tata Institute of Fundamental Research (TIFR), Bengaluru. She earned her BTech in Chemical Engineering at IIT Delhi and her PhD at the Indian Institute of Science (IISc), Bengaluru. Before joining TIFR, she worked in the National Aerospace Laboratories and the Jawaharlal Nehru Centre for Advanced Scientific Research, both in Bengaluru.

She is a fluid dynamicist working primarily on particulate and droplet flows, flows with phase change, and instabilities. She has won the Shanti Swarup Bhatnagar Award, the Distinguished Alumni Award of IIT Delhi, and the Platinum Jubilee Prize of IISc.
