IIT Gandhinagar is organising Ganita Sammelan 2025- History of Mathematics in India on 19-22 January.

This in-person four-day workshop will have a rich variety of events: plenary talks by distinguished scholars (including Prof Manjul Bhargava, Dr MD Srinivas, Prof MS Sriram, Prof K Ramasubramanian, Prof Amartya K Dutta), presentations by other scholars, release of at least two major new books, a session in remembrance of the towering scholar, the late Prof RC Gupta, results of a national quiz competition for schoolchildren on the history of Indian mathematics, interactive sessions with school students (including fun and games), etc.
Sunday 19th forenoon o 9:00 onward: Registration o 10:00 onward: Inauguration o Brief addresses by a few dignitaries o Brief presentation on the HoMI project o Keynote address by Prof Manjul Bhargava & interaction with the audience o Release of a few books on history of mathematics in India, and brief talk on their importance by Prof K. Ramasubramanian
Sunday 19th afternoon: 2 pm onward o Plenary talk by Prof Amartya K Dutta (40 minutes) o ‘Fun and games’ session with schoolchildren around the history of Indian mathematics, with games and activities specially designed by CCL, IIT Gandhinagar
Monday 20th forenoon: 9:30 am onward o Talk by Prof Ganti S. Murthy, National Coordinator, IKS Division of the Ministry of Education (30 minutes) o Panel discussion on new pedagogies for mathematics at school, including the integration of classical Indian mathematics, followed by interaction with the audience (1.5 hours); panellists: Prof Manjul Bhargava, Smt Anita Karwal (former Secretary, School Education, Ministry of Education), Dr M.D. Srinivas, Prof Rajat Moona (IIT Gandhinagar Director). Panel discussion moderated by Michel Danino o Plenary talk by Dr M.D. Srinivas (45 minutes)
Monday 20th afternoon o Session for paper presentations / special talks on new research in the field of Indian mathematics; speakers will include Prof M.S. Sriram on “Mathematics in Indian Astronomy Texts”
Tuesday 21st forenoon: 9:30 am onward o Talk by Prof C.S. Aravinda on the journey of the Bhāvanā magazine (30 minutes) o Session dedicated to the late Prof R.C. Gupta, towering scholar in field of Indian mathematics; three brief talks by Profs S.G. Dani, M.S. Sriram and Anupam Jain, with three video clips (from a recent interview curated by the HoMI project); honouring his memory through some of his relatives. Session moderated by Prof K. Ramasubramanian
