Submissions are invited for Painting Competition on World Dugong Day 2024 by Wildlife Institute of India. The last date of submission is May 20, 2024.

The Wildlife Institute of India is an autonomous natural resource service institution established in 1982 under the Ministry of Environment Forest and Climate change, Government of India.

Established in 1982, Wildlife Institute of India (WII) is an internationally acclaimed Institution, which offers training program, academic courses and advisory in wildlife research and management. The Institute is actively engaged in research across the breadth of the country on biodiversity related issues.

The Institute’s idyllic campus that has been carefully developed to create state of the art infrastructure encourages scholarly work.

The dugong is a marine mammal. It is one of four living species of the order Sirenia, which also includes three species of manatees. It is the only living representative of the once-diverse family Dugongidae; its closest modern relative, Steller’s sea cow, was hunted to extinction in the 18th century.

Dugongs are the only herbivorous, marine mammals in the world. They feed on seagrasses, an ecosystem which is highly vulnerable to anthropogenic pressure. These gentle giants are classified as vulnerable globally by the IUCN Red List. In India, they are only found in seagrass meadows across 3 regions; Gujarat, Tamil Nadu and Andaman-Nicobar Islands.

On the occasion of World Dugong Day 2024, WII invites artists to use their creativity to showcase “Dugongs in the Ocean“.

Certificates and goodies will be posted to winners. Your artwork will be featured on our social media handles.

Interested participants can submit online via this link.

The last date of submission is May 20, 2024.
