About BNHS

TheΒ Bombay Natural History SocietyΒ (BNHS), founded on 15 September 1883, is one of the largestΒ non-governmental organisationsΒ in India engaged inΒ conservationΒ andΒ biodiversityΒ research.Β It supports many research efforts through grants and publishes theΒ Journal of the Bombay Natural History Society. Many prominent naturalists, including the ornithologistsΒ SΓ‘lim AliΒ andΒ S. Dillon Ripley, have been associated with it.

BNHS was started by eight amateur naturalists of Mumbai, of which two were Indians. The guiding principle of BNHS has been that conservation should be based on scientific research – a tradition exemplified by its former president, Dr SΓ‘lim Ali – world renowned ornithologist and receiver of Padma Bhushan and Padma Vibhushan awards by Government of India. Other past stalwarts at BNHS included Mr B G Deshmukh, former president, who was Cabinet Secretary, Government of India and Mr J C Daniel, former vice-president and director, who was an internationally known wildlife biologist and conservationist.

Today the BNHS is headquartered in the specially constructed ‘Hornbill House’ in southernΒ Mumbai. It sponsors studies in Indian wildlife and conservation, and publishes a four-monthly journal,Β Journal of the Bombay Natural History Society, as well as a quarterly magazine,Β Hornbill.

BNHS is the partner ofΒ BirdLife InternationalΒ in India. It has been designated as a ‘Scientific and Industrial Research Organisation’ by the Department of Science and Technology. Its headquarter is in Mumbai and has one regional centre at Wetland Research and Training Centre, nearΒ Chilika Lake,Β Odisha.
