The Ministry of Jal Shakti, Government of India, is spearheading efforts to improve water resource management in the country, a critical initiative in the context of climate change. Recognizing the need for collective action, the Ministry actively involves stakeholders across sectors in promoting innovative practices for sustainable water management.
Encourage the various stakeholder including the Civil Societies, Gram Panchayats, Urban Local Bodies, Water User Associations, Institutions, Corporate Sector etc. for adopting innovative practices of ground water augmentation by rainwater harvesting and artificial recharge, promoting water use efficiency, recycling & re-use of water and creating awareness through people’s participation in the targeted areas resulting into the sustainability of ground water resources development, adequate capacity building amongst the stakeholders etc.
Since 2018, the Ministry has been organizing the National Water Awards (NWAs) to honor individuals, organizations, and institutions implementing impactful measures to conserve water. The awards celebrate practices such as augmenting groundwater, rainwater harvesting, recycling water, and fostering a culture of sustainable water management.
For 2024, the 6th National Water Awards have been launched through the Rashtriya Puraskar portal via this link, inviting online entries. These awards aim to inspire and recognize efforts in various categories, including the ‘Best School’ category, which encourages schools practicing innovative water conservation strategies to participate.
Any State, District, Village Panchayat, Urban Local Body, School, College, Institution, Industry, Civil Society, Water User Association who has done good work in the field of water conservation and management is eligible to apply.

All applications received for 6th National Water Awards are scrutinized by a Screening Committee of the Department & shortlisted applications are placed before the Jury Committee which is constituted by the Department of Water Resources, River Development and Ganga Rejuvenation, Ministry of Jal Shakti. No Award is conferred except on the recommendation of the Jury Committee. The recommendations of the Committee are submitted to the Hon’ble Minister (Jal Shakti) for approval. Thereafter, the names of winners are announced on a suitable date.
Schools that actively implement water conservation measures—such as efficient rainwater harvesting systems, groundwater recharge projects, or effective wastewater recycling practices—are encouraged to apply. Participation guidelines are detailed on the Ministry’s website (6th NWA Guidelines). The last date to submit entries is December 31, 2024.
